Won-Pil Baek

Dr. Won-Pil Baek is working as the Vice President for Nuclear Safety Research at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) since December 2010. He graduated from Seoul National University (B.S.) and Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST; M.S. and Ph.D.), majoring nuclear engineering. He joined KAERI in 2001 and led thermal hydraulics safety and severe accident research until November 2010. Before joining KAERI, he worked for KAIST as a researcher and research professor.

Dr. Baek is a very active professional in nuclear safety and thermal hydraulics. He co-authored two books (Nuclear Safety, Critical Heat Flux) and published over 60 peer-reviewed papers in archival journals. His professional activities include:

  • Member, Advisory Committee on Nuclear Safety & Security, NSSC Korea
  • Former Chair, KNS Division on Nuclear Thermal Hydraulics and Safety
  • Former Chair, Korean Nuclear Society Committee on the Fukushima Accident
  • Member, OECD/NEA Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations
  • Member, National Academy Engineering of Korea
