Kenneth R. Balkey

Kenneth R. Balkey is senior vice president, ASME Standards and Certification (2011 – 2014) and chair, ASME Council on Standards and Certification (2011 – 2014).  He is a Consulting Engineer at Westinghouse Electric Company in Pittsburgh, PA with 41 years of service in the nuclear power industry.  Mr. Balkey advises technology developments related to Codes and Standards and provides consultation across a range of technical fields for current and new reactors worldwide.  He performed and directed reliability and risk evaluations for nuclear and non nuclear structures, systems and components over his lengthy career.  He has authored 150 publications and documents related to risk evaluations of the integrity of piping, vessels and structures, and the performance of components using state of the art probabilistic assessment techniques.  He holds two patents related to reactor pressure vessel integrity and risk-informed inspection of heat exchangers.  His honors include the ASME Melvin R. Green Codes and Standards Medal (2008) and several other awards from ASME, Westinghouse, and other institutions.  He was elevated to the respected grade of ASME Fellow in 2010.  Mr. Balkey earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh.  He serves as an adjunct faculty lecturer, University of Pittsburgh Nuclear Engineering Program co-leading the delivery of a graduate course, “Case Studies in Nuclear Codes and Standards,” since January 2010.
