United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission - Protecting People and the Environment

W18  The Promises and Perils of Risk-Informed Decisionmaking

This session will focus on experience with various regulations that allow risk analysis to inform regulatory decisions at the NRC, including 10 CFR 50.48(c), “National Fire Protection Association Standard NFPA 805,” the Significance Determination Process, and the Risk Assessment Standardization Project (RASP) Handbook for Risk Assessment of Operational Events. Perspectives from U.S. industry and the NRC on the use of risk information in the regulatory process will be presented. Discussions will focus on areas where there have been differences of opinion about analytical methods and the use of conservatism.
