W21 Part 2—International Research–Post-Fukushima Research

The events at Fukushima Dai-ichi highlighted the importance of properly characterizing and evaluating the possible external events that could affect a nuclear power plant. Fukushima also highlighted the need to assess and better understand beyond-design-basis events and their uncertainties. The focus of these two back-to-back sessions (Part 1 and Part 2) is to bring multiple countries together to provide an overview of the work they are doing related to safety research on reactors and spent fuel pools, including uncertainties, as a result of the event in Japan. The NRC also will discuss its current research in this area.
