Overview

The mission of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is to license and regulate the Nation’s civilian use of radioactive materials to provide reasonable assurance of adequate protection of public health and safety, to promote the common defense and security, and to protect the environment.

The NRC’s FY 2025 budget request, including the Office of the Inspector General, is $994,946K, including 2,897.9 full-time equivalents. This request represents an increase of $51,793K or approximately 5.5 percent as compared to FY 2023 enacted, primarily to support increased salaries and benefits consistent with Office of Management and Budget guidance. The budget request proposes the use of $20,000K in carryover to offset the Nuclear Reactor Safety budget resulting in a gross budget authority of $974,946K.  The NRC plans to recover $823,946K from fees, resulting in a net budget authority of $151,000K.  This is an increase of $14,000K as compared to FY 2023 enacted, primarily to support the University Nuclear Leadership Program, international technical assistance, non-profit educational institutions, and the minority serving institutions grant program.

The Office of the Inspector General’s (OIG’s) component of the FY 2025 proposed budget is $19,578K, including 73.0 FTE, of which $18,073K is for auditing and investigation activities for NRC programs, and $1,505K is for the auditing and investigation activities of the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB). This is an increase of $3,809K or approximately 24.2 percent as compared to FY 2023 enacted.
