United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission - Protecting People and the Environment

Public Involvement in Waste Confidence

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has a long-standing practice of conducting our regulatory, licensing, and oversight activities in an open manner. For that reason, we are committed to informing the public and providing opportunities for participation in our decision-making process regarding Waste Confidence. Toward that end, we periodically hold meetings, conferences, and workshops to inform the public or solicit input. We also occasionally publish documents for public comment. The staff uses information obtained from the public to inform our regulations, guidance, licensing, and inspection processes; environmental reviews; or other activities. For details, see the following topics:

For general information about available opportunities for public involvement in NRC activities, see Public Meetings and Involvement, Hearing Opportunities and License Applications, and NUREG/BR-0215, "Public Involvement in the Regulatory Process."

Comment Period on the Waste Confidence Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement and Proposed Rule

The comment period on the Waste Confidence draft generic environmental impact statement (DGEIS) and proposed rule closed on December 20, 2013.  All comments received prior to the deadline are being considered in NRC’s preparation of the Waste Confidence final generic environmental impact statement and rule.  Public comments are available in the NRC’s Agencywide Document Access and Management System (ADAMS).  To find your comment, do a content search using the term “NRC-2012-0246” (the Waste Confidence rulemaking docket number) and the name under which you submitted comments.  If you encounter problems in accessing documents located in ADAMS, please contact the NRC’s Public Document Room reference staff at 1-800-397-4209, or via e-mail at pdr@nrc.gov.
