Vision for Integrated Source Management

Vision for Integrated Source Management ProcessThe National Source tracking System (NSTS), and future Web –based Licensing (WBL), and the License Verification System (LVS), are key components of a comprehensive program for the security and control of radioactive material. When complete, these components will form an integrated source management system that will include information on all NRC and Agreement State licensees and over 50,000 high risk radioactive sources possessed by approximately 1,300 licensees.

The Benefits of System Integration

  1. Make national radioactive source authorization, possession and transaction information available to other government agencies with a role in the protection of the Nation from nuclear and radiological threats.
  2. Provide licensees with a secure automated means to verify license information and possession authorization prior to initiating radioactive material transfers.
  3. Enable NRC to monitor the location, possession, transfer and disposal of high risk radioactive sources through the country.
  4. Improve source accountability, and alert the regulators to tracking discrepancies.
  5. Modernize NRC licensing and inspection management systems.
