NRC SCHEDULES MEETING TO DISCUSS BRUNSWICK
NUCLEAR PLANT EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATORS
Printable Version PDF Icon

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a public meeting with officials of Progress Energy on Tuesday, July 28, in Atlanta to discuss an inspection finding related to the four emergency diesel generators at the Brunswick nuclear power plant, located near Southport on the southern coast of North Carolina.

NRC and Progress Energy officials will discuss the significance of a finding involving Progress Energy’s inadequate implementation of a modification that resulted in the inability to remotely operate all four emergency diesel generators. Emergency diesel generators at nuclear plants provide backup power to safely shut the plant down if the site were to lose all sources of offsite power.

The NRC evaluates regulatory performance at commercial nuclear power plants with a color-coded system which classifies findings as green, white, yellow or red, in increasing order of safety significance. The NRC’s preliminary evaluation determined that this issue at Brunswick is “white,” meaning it is of low to moderate safety significance.

No decisions on final safety significance, any apparent violations or possible enforcement action will be made at the conference. Those decisions will be made later by NRC officials.

The meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the NRC’s Region II office, located on the 24th floor of the Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center at 61 Forsyth Street SW in Atlanta.  The public may observe the meeting and will have an opportunity to talk with NRC officials after the business portion, but before the meeting is adjourned. Persons wishing to participate in this meeting by toll-free teleconference should contact the NRC’s Rebecca Nease at 404-562-4530 or rebecca.nease@nrc.gov.
