VICTORIA COUNTY APPLICATION FOR
NEW REACTORS AVAILABLE ON NRC WEBSITE
Printable Version PDF Icon

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has made available to the public the combined operating license (COL) application for two new reactors at the Victoria County site near Victoria, Texas.

The applicant, Exelon Nuclear Texas Holdings, submitted the application and associated information Sept. 3. The application, minus proprietary or security-related details, is available on the NRC Web site at: http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-reactors/col/victoria.html.

The Exelon application seeks approval to build and operate two Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactors (ESBWR) at the site, approximately 13 miles south of Victoria. The ESBWR is a 1,500 MWe design currently under NRC review for possible certification; more information is available on the NRC Web site at: http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-reactors/design-cert/esbwr.html.

The NRC staff is currently conducting an initial check of the application to determine whether it contains sufficient information required for a formal review. If the application is found acceptable for review, the NRC will docket the application; this decision is expected by early November. If the staff accepts the application, the NRC will then notice an opportunity for the public to participate in an adjudicatory hearing on the application.

The industry has submitted 12 COL applications, including Victoria County, up to this point, and the NRC expects five more applications in 2008. Information about the new reactor licensing process is available on the NRC Web site at: http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-reactors.html.
