NRC SEEKS COMMENTS ON DRAFT STRATEGIC PLAN
Printable Version PDF Icon

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is seeking public comments on its draft Strategic Plan, covering Fiscal Years 2004 to 2009, that describes what the NRC intends to do over the next five years to carry out it’s mission.

The draft Strategic Plan has been restructured to improve its focus and readability, but does not represent a fundamental change in the agency’s mission. The NRC’s overarching goal of ensuring the safe use of radioactive materials and enhancing safety remains unchanged. The Plan along with a new vision statement, better aligns the NRC’s goals with its mission and strategic objective to “enable the use and management of radioactive materials and nuclear fuels for beneficial purposes in a manner that (1) protects public health and safety and the environment; (2) promotes the security of our nation; and (3) provides for regulatory actions that are effective, efficient, and open.”

The NRC issued its first Strategic Plan in 1997 and is required to update it every three years. The draft Strategic Plan will replace the agency’s existing plan (FY 2000-2005). It reduces redundancy that exists in the current Strategic Plan and better reflects real world changes in our environment since September 11, 2001.

All interested individuals are encouraged to provide their comments on the draft Strategic Plan. Stakeholder feedback will be valuable in helping the Commission develop a final plan.

By December 31, all comments should be submitted to the NRC electronically at: NRCREP@NRC.GOV ; by mail to: Chief, Rules and Directives Branch, Mail Stop T6-D59, Office of Administration, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001; or faxed to: Chief, Rules and Directives Branch at (301) 415-5144.

The draft Strategic Plan is available on NRC’s web site at: www.nrc.gov and is available for inspection and copying for a fee at the NRC Public Document Room, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland.
