BILL BORCHARDT NAMED DIRECTOR OF THE NRC'S OFFICE OF ENFORCEMENT
Bill Borchardt has been named Director of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Office of Enforcement.
His appointment became effective August 1. Mr. Borchardt succeeds James Lieberman who has been appointed as a Special Counsel in the Office of the General Counsel (OGC). Mr. Lieberman's appointment to OGC was at his request to return to the legal field.
Mr. Borchardt joined the NRC in 1983 as a reactor engineer in Region I, outside of Philadelphia, Pa.. Since that time, he has held a number of progressively responsible positions including resident/senior resident inspector at the Limerick, Salem, and Hope Creek nuclear power plants in the northeast; Senior Regional Coordinator, Office of the Executive Director for Operations; Technical Assistant, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR); and Section Chief in the Standardization Project Directorate, NRR.
He was appointed to the Senior Executive Service in 1993 and served as Director, Standardization Project Directorate and Chief, Inspection Program Branch in NRR. In August 1998, he was appointed Deputy Director, Office of Enforcement.
Prior to joining the NRC, Mr. Borchardt was an officer in the U.S. Navy's Nuclear Power Program. He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and received a B.S. degree in Chemistry in 1978.
