No. 96-65 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

          CHAIRMAN OF UKRAINIAN PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE
                   ON NUCLEAR SAFETY VISITS NRC

Dr. Mykhailo Pavlovsky, chairman of the Committee on Nuclear
Policy and Safety of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (the Ukrainian
parliament) and four of his colleagues visited the Nuclear
Regulatory Commission Tuesday (May 7).

They conferred with NRC Chairman Shirley Ann Jackson; with
Commissioners Kenneth C. Rogers and Greta J. Dicus; and with
senior members of the agency staff. Discussion topics included
the NRC regulatory program, its legal basis, and the agency's
relationship with Congress.

The visit grew out of a meeting last year in Kiev with
Chairman Jackson, who suggested that Dr. Pavlovsky come to the
United States to view first-hand how nuclear issues are dealt
with by various elements of the U. S. government, including
development of a regulatory framework rooted in U.S. law.
Subsequently, the visit was arranged by the United States
Information Agency at NRC's suggestion. Since the late 1980s,
the U.S. has cooperated with Ukraine (formerly part of the Soviet
Union) in nuclear reactor safety.

While in this country, the delegation also has scheduled
meetings with officials and staff members of Congress, the
Department of Energy, state regulatory bodies in Minnesota, and
nuclear industry and public interest groups. The schedule also
includes trips to the Calvert Cliffs and Prairie Island nuclear
power plants.
