               NRC LICENSING BOARD SETS PREHEARING
CONFERENCE ON GEORGIA TECH RESEARCH REACTOR

An Atomic Safety and Licensing Board has scheduled a prehearing conference April
24 in Atlanta, Georgia, to discuss licensing issues involving the Georgia Tech research
reactor.

The conference, which is open to the public, will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the U.S. Court
of Appeals, Courtroom 338, 56 Forsyth Street.

Representatives of the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), Georgians
Against Nuclear Energy (GANE), and the NRC staff will participate.

Georgia Tech has requested renewal of the research reactor's operating license for an
additional 20 years. The Licensing Board has granted GANE's request to intervene and will
consider its allegation that management problems at the facility render it unsafe.

Discussions at the conference will include the scheduling of witnesses for a hearing
to start May 20 in Atlanta and obtaining stipulations concerning the authenticity of certain
documents as well as admissions of fact.

Members of the Licensing Board are Charles Bechhoefer, chairman, Dr. Jerry R. Kline
and Dr. Peter S. Lam.
