Related Documents on The New Siren SystemThe Energy Policy Act of 2005 was enacted on August 8, 2005. It directed the NRC to require that power reactors with a large population within 50 miles of the plant have backup power to the siren system. The siren system is used to alert the population within 10 miles of the plant to listen to an emergency broadcast station for instructions and information in the event of an emergency at the plant. Indian Point Units 2 and 3 were the only power reactors which met the criteria. On January 31, 2006, the NRC issued an order to Entergy, the owner of Indian Point Units 2 and 3, to install backup power to the siren system by January 30, 2007. There were delays, and the NRC issued civil penalties amounting to $780,000 to Entergy. The new siren system with backup power was declared in-service on August 27, 2008.
