Project Overview

The staff of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is currently engaged in pre-application activities on the mPower small modular reactor design. The mPower is an integral pressurized-water reactor (iPWR), designed by the Babcock & Wilcox Company. It is a light water reactor with the reactor and steam generator located in a single reactor vessel located in an underground containment. The mPower reactor has a rated thermal output of 500 MWt and electrical output of 160 MWe.

A design certification application is expected in the 4th quarter of calendar year 2013.
