11/03/2006 Previously, NRC's split sample testing discovered discrepancies with Entergy's strontium-90 analysis results reported for seven on-site monitoring wells, sampled between August 1 - September 18, 2006. NRC's results, which were similar to results reported by the State of New York-Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS/DEC), indicated higher strontium-90 concentrations in these monitoring wells than was reported by Entergy's analytical contractor. Subsequently, Entergy investigated the situation and confirmed the discrepancy; terminated its contract with the affected vendor; enlisted the services of a new analytical laboratory; and enhanced its quality control program to assure prompt recognition of discrepant analytical results. This short-term condition did not result in any dose assessment consequence. To-date, analytical results from Entergy's new vendor have compared well with NRC's split sample analysis.
11/01/2006 Entergy completed a three-day pump test from an extraction well (RW-1) in the vicinity of the Unit-2 spent fuel pool. The test confirmed the feasibility of using RW-1 as a leak monitor for the Unit-2 spent fuel pool. Additional testing is expected to determine the optimum flow rate to affect sampling without affecting groundwater from the adjacent Unit 1 spent fuel pool leakage plume.
08/02/2006 On August 2, 2006, Indian Point Energy Center (Entergy) informed Region I that it was preparing to test remediation of the tritium ground water contamination in the vicinity of the Unit-2 spent fuel pool. Entergy intends to test its ability to pump ground water from a extraction well in an effort to reduce tritium concentration in the vicinity of Unit-2, without causing cross-contamination from the strontium-90 contaminated ground water associated with the adjacent Unit-1 facility. Entergy expects to conduct the tests within the next few weeks following discussions with NRC and the State of New York-Department of Environmental Conservation hydrological specialists. This effort marks the first step toward remediation of contaminated groundwater since site characterization was initiated in September 2005.
05/24/2006 Frequently Asked Questions has been updated to address strontium-90 groundwater contamination affecting Indian Point.

A split sample was taken on February 28, 2006 of MW-37 by Entergy, NYS/DEC, and the NRC. Monitoring well MW-37 is located on the west side of the discharge canal (inside the Unit-2 turbine building); and samples from four different compartments as deep as -42 feet below Main Sea Level (MSL). NRC received preliminary analytical results for this well on March 21, 2006 from its contractor Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education (ORISE), which identified strontium-90 (Sr-90) at concentrations as high as 26 pCi/l. (For perspective, the EPA drinking water limit for Sr-90 is 8 pCi/l, i.e., continuous ingestion of water at this concentration for a year is expected to result in an annual effective total body dose of 4 millirem).

03/13/2006 Public Meeting Notice for the NRC Special Inspection Team's (SIT) Preliminary Review results of the Indian Point Energy Center's (Entergy Nuclear Northeast) Spent Fuel Pool(SFP) and Onsite Tritium Groundwater Monitoring program. Meeting is on March 28, 2006, at 6:30 pm. (Category 3).

On January 24, 2006, Entergy collected groundwater samples at various off-site locations, including the Algonquon outfall, an adjacent stream from the neighboring LaFarge Gypsum facility, and the Trap Rock Quarry to monitor for plant-related radioactivity. Subsequent analysis of the samples indicated no detectable plant-related radioactivity, including tritium and strontium-90 (Sr-90).
