Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste and Materials

The Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste and Materials (ACNW&M) was established by the Commission in June 1988 to provide independent technical advice on agency activities, programs, and key technical issues associated with regulation, management, and safe disposal of radioactive waste.

The ACNW&M interacts with representatives of the NRC; the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards; other Federal, State, and local agencies; Indian tribes; the public; and other stakeholders, as appropriate, to fulfill its responsibilities. The bases for the committee’s advice include the regulations governing high-level waste disposal, low-level waste disposal, and other applicable regulations and legislative mandates. The ACNW&M examines and reports on areas of concern as requested by the Commission and may undertake studies and activities on its own initiative, as appropriate.

The ACNW&M is independent of the NRC staff and reports directly to the Commission, which appoints its members. The operational practices of the ACNW&M are governed by the provisions of the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) [Exit NRC]. Advisory committees are structured to provide a forum where experts representing many technical perspectives can provide independent advice that is factored into the Commission’s decisionmaking process. Most Committee meetings are open to the public and any member of the public may request an opportunity to make an oral statement during the committee meeting. Those who wish to do so should contact the person indicated on the ACNW&M meeting schedule page.
