Charles A. Casto
Charles A. Casto became Regional Administrator for the Region III office of the NRC in May 2012. Region III is headquartered in Lisle, Ill., where Casto oversees regulatory activities in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin.
Casto joined the NRC in 1985 as an Operator Licensing Examiner in Region II. He has held many leadership positions at the NRC including: Division Director for Region II, Deputy Regional Administrator for Construction in Region II and Deputy Regional Administrator for Region IV.
Casto served as the lead NRC executive providing support to the Japanese government and U.S. Ambassador following the nuclear incident in Japan in 2011. He also received the Presidential Distinguished Service Award in 2012.
Prior to joining the NRC, Casto worked in the nuclear industry as an operator and operations instructor at Browns Ferry in Alabama in 1979, and as an NRC certified Senior Reactor Operator Instructor at Brunswick in North Carolina in 1984.
He received a Bachelor's degree from Regents College in Albany, a Master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Georgia, and is a doctoral student in business at Kennesaw State College in Kennesaw, Ga.
